Operational Improvement – Example 1

Client Profile:

This client has two facilities, one with 40,000 Emergency Department visits annually and the other with over 83,000 annual Emergency Department visits with a huge seasonal volume fluctuation.

Project Description:

Echo was asked to evaluate the current Emergency Department efficiency and operations, clinical documentation, charge capture, facility coding and vendor selection for an emergency department information system (EDIS).

Results and Achievements:

Echo was able to assist the client with hospital process improvement and increased net revenue and contained costs across the health system. We also improved emergency department efficiency by implementing a clinical leadership structure that enhanced ED patient flow resulting in a decrease in patients who leave without being seen from 5% to < 1%, improved physician and patient satisfaction. The implementation of a templated chart prepared the department for transition to electronic medical record. Echo led a collaborative team on a vendor search for an emergency department information system (EDIS) and functioned as project manager for a total EDIS implementation.
